Left Coast Chamber Ensemble to World Premiere ‘Dorothea And Artemisia’

By David Salazar

The Left Coast Chamber Ensemble will present “Dorothea and Artemisia,” the world premiere of two chamber operas. On June 1 and 2, 2019 at the Z Space in San Francisco.

The operas in question are Christopher Stark’s “From the Field” and Laura Schwendinger’s “Artemisia.”

The former explores the work of Depression-era photographer Dorothea Lange and was written by Megan Stark. The work will feature soprano Nikki Einfield, who will be accompanied by violin and cello. The opera will feature projected images of Lange’s photos as designed by Andrew Lucia.

The latter takes a look at the life of 17th-century Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi. It was written by Ginger Strand and composed by Laura Schwendinger, who noted that “Artemisia achieved great renown in an era when women painters were not generally accepted, and she was the first women to be a member of the Accademia delle Arte del Disegno in Florence. She specialized in depictions of strong, often anguished women from biblical stories and myth. These depictions were often autobiographical, as she relived the traumatic events of her life through her art.”

“Artemisia” will star mezzo-soprano Betany Coffland as well as Kyle Stegall, Marnie Breckenridge, Jonathan Smucker, Igor Vieira, and Nikki Einfeld.
