League of Composers to Present ‘Louis Karchin / A Retrospective’

The League of Composers will present “Louis Karchin / A Retrospective” on Sept. 22, 2024 at Merkin Hall.

The event features world premieres and works written between 2018-23 by Karchin, who has composed over 100 works. He is also a co-founder of the Harvard Group for New Music, the Chamber Players of the League-ISCM, and the Orchestra of the League of Composers. Among his compositions are two operas, vocal-instrumental song cycles, and numerous orchestra, chamber, and solo works. His works have been recorded on Naxos, Bridge, New World, New Focus, and Albany labels, and his music has been published by Wise Music-Edition Peters and the American Composers Alliance.

Among the works on the program is the world premiere of the “Two Sacred Songs” set to poetry by George Herbert. The pieces will be interpreted by soprano Marisa Karchin and pianist Steven Beck. Another world premiere includes the “Compositions on Canvas: Two Art Songs” featuring soprano Alice Teyssier and pianist Steven Beck. This song cycle features poetry by Steven Withrow.

The program also includes “Sonata-Fantasia,” “Sonata quasi un capriccio,” and “Trio for violin, cello, and piano.”

The performance kicks off at 4 p.m.
