On Saturday, Oct. 11, Metropolitan Opera audiences had a surprise performance by Lawrence Brownlee in “La Sonnambula.”

The tenor was replacing Xabier Anduaga, who was forced to cancel the performance due to illness.

Brownlee took to social media and said, “On Saturday, I stepped in—on very short notice—for my ailing colleague Xabier Anduaga in Rolando Villazón’s production of ‘La Sonnambula’ at the Met, starring the incomparable Nadine Sierra as Amina. Xabier, I wish you a speedy recovery back to full health! It was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking, having only a day and a half to prepare for a completely new production. But I believe in pushing myself out of the comfort zone—it’s how we grow, find excitement, and keep the blood pumping! After nearly seven years away from the role of Elvino, it was a thrill and a true honor to bring him back to life on the Met stage and add another cherished memory to my ever-growing list of roles there.”

Brownlee is currently in rehearsals for “La Fille du Régiment” and is a well-known Bel Canto singer who has performed the role of Elvino at the Opernhaus Zürich and the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Anduaga is set to return to the production on Oct. 14, 2025. “La Sonnambula” stars Nadine Sierra and is conducted by Riccardo Frizza.
