Lawrence Brownlee, Nicholas Phan, Gabriel Kahane Join San Francisco Performances’ July Music Session

By David Salazar

San Francisco Performances has announced three new vocal performances as part of its July music sessions.

“Our planning for the Summer Music Sessions has been in the works for some time, and all along we had hoped to be able to include vocal performances in the complete line-up. However, at the time we announced this series, COVID guidelines for singers were still unclear. Happily, the guidelines have changed and we are very pleased to be able to add these three vocal concerts. We’re also very grateful to the artists—Gabriel Kahane, Nicholas Phan, and Lawrence Brownlee—for keeping these dates open on their calendars in anticipation of being able to perform here this July. The voice is the most personal instrument, and after 14 months of silence it’s great to be able to include singing in these first live person-to-person concerts.” said SFP President Melanie Smith in a press release.

First up, Gabriel Kahane will present “After the Silence,” singing and performing at the piano. He will perform songs he composed in October 2020.

Performance Date: July 17, 2021

After that, Kahane will join forces with tenor Nicholas Phan for another recital performance. They will premiere Kahane’s “Final Privacy Song” as well as music by Schubert.

Performance Date: July 18, 2021

Finally, famed tenor Lawrence Brownlee will perform a recital entitled “Songs of My Youth,” which will feature music by Scarlatti, Torelli, Caccini, Legrenzi, Schubert, Strauss, Fauré, Poulenc, and Liszt, as well as spirituals by H.T. Burleigh and Hall Johnson.

Performance Date: July 22, 2021
