Last 2 Finalists For BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2019 Main Prize Revealed

Soprano Sooyeon Lee and Argentine mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Barrientos are the final two finalists of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2019. Lee was selected as the winner of the fourth round while Barrientos was picked as the wildcard contestant.

Both will appear in the grand finale alongside baritone Andrei Kymach, tenor Mingjie Lei, and bass Patrick Guetti.

Lee, who is also set to appear in the Song Prize Final, performed the mad scene from “Lucia di Lammermoor” for the fourth round on Wednesday. A graduate of the Seoul National University, she has appeared in the ensemble of the Staatstheater Oldenburg and was also a contestant at the Opera 2017 competition.

Barrientos studied at the Higher Institute of Art at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, where she has appeared in leading roles in such operas as “Der Rosenkavalier,” “Cavalleria Rusticana,” “Aida,” and “Adriana Lecouvreur;” she also sang the title role in “Carmen” alongside José Cura. She has also performed at the Slovenian National Theatre and the Royal Opera House Muscat. For the Main Prize concert she is set to perform music by Cilea, Saint-Saëns, and Elgar.
