Laquita Mitchell & Adam Lau Lead Oratorio Society of New York’s Opening Night

By Francisco Salazar

The Oratorio Society of New York led by Music Director Kent Tritle is set to open its 150th Anniversary and 2023-2024 season on Nov. 6, 2023.

The concert will showcase Bach’s Magnificat and Mozart’s Requiem at the Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall.

The concert will feature soloists Laquita Mitchell, soprano, Lucia Bradford, mezzo-soprano, Eric Finbarr Carey, tenor, and Adam Lau, bass. Kent Tritle will conduct the Orchestra of the Society.

Bach composed the “Magnificat” as a hymn of praise by Mary found in the Gospel of Luke.  Meanwhile, Mozart’s Requiem was composed when his health was deteriorating. The commission came from an anonymous patron in 1791, later revealed to be Franz von Walsegg, who had intended to pass off the Requiem as his own work.

The season will continue in December with the Oratorio Society of New York’s 149th rendition of Handel’s Messiah on Dec. 18, 2023.
