LA Opera to Present Du Yun’s ‘The Zolle Suite’

By Logan Martell

On July 9, 2021 LA Opera will present the eighth installment of its “Digital Shorts” series, Du Yun’s “The Zolle Suite.”

This short film brings three chapters from the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer’s 2005 opera “Zolle” to the screen. Produced by Ron Diamond of Acme Filmworks, the three movements are handled by a trio of animation directors: Steven Woloshen, Ben Swiczinsky, and Kristian Pedersen.

The music will be performed by mezzo-soprano Hai-Ting Chinn and Du Yun as narrator, joined by the International Contemporary Ensemble, under the baton of Julian Wachner.

“Experimental animation is about going with the flow, not trying to make sense out of every image you see, but rather being free to go on a crafted journey of music and visuals,” says Ron Diamond on the visual approach. “The harmony of artful animation for each movement is a lovely testament to the form. Let the textures, colors and imagery wash over you; each interpretation is unique to each viewer.”

In 2022, LA Opera and Du Yun will present the West Coast premiere of her monodrama “In Our Daughter’s Eyes,” starring Nathan Gunn.
