LA Opera to Present ‘Black Love’ As Part of its ‘After Hours’ Recital Series

By David Salazar

Under the leadership of new Artist in Residence Russell Thomas, the LA Opera is poised to bring back its “After Hours” recital series on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021.

The first recital in this series will be “Black Love,” a concert featuring love songs by renowned African American composers including H. Leslie Adams, Margaret Bonds, H.T. Burleigh, James H. East, Undine Smith Moore, and William Grant Still.

The showcase will feature sopranos Alaysha Fox and Tiffany Townsend as well as tenor Ashley Faatoalia and pianist Leonard Hayes.

“These great American composers of song should be as widely performed and as well known as Schubert, Schumann and Strauss. This recital honors them and their contributions to classical music,” said Thomas, who curated the program. “I wanted to feature music that celebrates the loves, joys, passions and desires of the extraordinary men and women who wrote them.”

Audiences can check out the program via the company’s official Facebook and YouTube page.
