LA Opera Issues Statement Regarding Plácido Domingo Sexual Harassment Accusations

The Los Angeles Opera has made a statement regarding its position toward Plácido Domingo, the company’s Eli and Edythe Broad General Manager.

In the statement, the company noted that it will conduct investigations concerning accusations against the famed opera star. Reports on Tuesday noted that Domingo was being accused by nine women of sexual harassment, though there were reportedly even more mentions of inappropriate behavior with other women.

“We believe all employees and artists should be treated respectfully and feel safe and secure within their work environment,” said the spokesperson for the company. “LA Opera has robust human resources policies and procedures in place. In accordance with those policies, LA Opera will engage outside counsel to investigate the concerning allegations about Plácido Domingo.

“Plácido Domingo has been a dynamic creative force in the life of LA Opera and the artistic culture of Los Angeles for more than three decades. Nevertheless, we are committed to doing everything we can to foster a professional and collaborative environment where all our employees and artists feel equally comfortable, valued and respected.”

The Philadelphia Orchestra was the first American institution to react to the news, dropping Domingo from its opening night concert. Other institutions, such as the Salzburg Festival, have shown continued support for Domingo until proof of the accusations is brought forth.
