LA Opera Hires Lawyer For Plácido Domingo Case

By Francisco Salazar

The LA Opera announced the lawyer who will investigate the sexual harassment case against Plácido Domingo.

The company said it would immediately open a “thorough and independent investigation” and hired Debra Wong Yang from the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher to lead the investigation.

The company however did not respond questions about how the investigation would be carried out and its expected duration as it has decided to keep matters private.

Yang is a former U.S. attorney and Los Angeles County Superior Court judge who is chair of her firm’s Crisis Management Practice Group. Yang is also an experienced investigator who was hired by the University of Southern California two years ago to look into the conduct of the school’s former medical school dean, who admitted using methamphetamines.

The investigation comes a week after Domingo was accused by nine women of sexual harassment through an article in the Associated Press. Since then the singer was fired by the Philadelphia Orchestra and the San Francisco Opera but was backed by the Teatro Real, Palau de les Arts, Salzburg Festival and Royal Opera House, among other companies. The accusations also led to multiple artists supporting him through social media.
