LA Opera Announces Premiere of Short Film ‘let me come in’ Featuring Soprano Angel Blue

By Chris Ruel

LA Opera has announced the April 30, 2021 premiere of ‘let me come in,” a digital short film created by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang and filmmaker Bill Morrison.

Star soprano Angel Blue provided the vocals for the Lang/Morrison collaboration, for which Lang served as both composer and lyricist. The premiere will stream on LA Opera’s “On Now” platform as part of its Digital Shorts series and is free to view.

Lang’s choice of text for “let me come in” is a single verse in several translations from the biblical Songs of Solomon.

“I love the sense of waiting for something beautiful to happen, the anticipation of the moment, and also I love that the narrator hasn’t moved to open the door yet,” said Lang in the LA Opera press release. “The sensuousness of the waiting is more powerful for her, and for us, than the actual physicality of meeting.”

Morrison, who produced and directed the short, is known for his highly acclaimed films “Decasia” and “Dawson City.” He has long been captivated by old, decaying nitrate film stock. Using footage from what are perhaps the last surviving reels of the 1928 German silent film, “Pawns of Passion,” the 93-year-old film reveals “imagery that seems to be pulled from a state of semi-consciousness, asleep but dreaming,” Morrison stated in the release.

He went on to describe Lang’s song as “a rumination on love and the borderline separating two souls, seemingly from the precipice of consciousness. When I heard Angel Blue’s incredible interpretation, my mind immediately recalled the ambiguous tension in this scene from ‘Pawns of Passion.’ Left to rot in a barn, and then scanned and archived again for another eight years on my own personal hard drive, it has found a new life through David’s words and music, and Angel Blue’s voice. It was very exciting to see how quickly it came together and how perfectly the image, words and sound meshed.”

“let me come in” features Blue, violist David Creswell, cellist Anja Wood, percussionist Miles Salerni. Bryan Wagorn conducts.

The short film will receive its broadcast premiere as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival, running May 6-9, 2021.
