La Florida Capella to Honor Legrenzi’s 400th Anniversary
By David SalazarConductor Marian Polin and period ensemble La Florida Capella will present three performances of Giovanni Legrenzi‘s oratorio “La morte del cor penitente,” marking the 400th anniversary of the Bergamo composer’s birth.
The series opens on May 22 at the Innsbrucker Hofmusik before continuing as part of the Festival Regionale di Musica Sacra, with performances on May 23 at the Franciscan Church in Bolzano and May 24 at the Church of San Francesco Saverio in Trento.
“La morte del cor penitente” is one of Legrenzi’s few surviving oratorios. It will star Alberto Allegrezza as the sinner, Giulia Bolcato as Penance, and Elena Di Marino as Hope.
“‘La morte del cor penitente’ by Giovanni Legrenzi is an oratorio of extraordinary expressive power, in which spirituality and theater coexist in a surprisingly modern way,” Bolcato said per an official press release. “For me, approaching Legrenzi also carries a deeply personal meaning. Venice and its musical tradition form part of my artistic and human roots, and returning to these soundscapes means reconnecting with a realm that I feel to be profoundly close to me.”
