Kristine Opolais, Vida Miknevičiūtė, Tuomas Pursio & Stefan Pop Lead Finnish National Opera’s 2024-25 Season

The Finnish National Opera has announced its 2024-25 season.

Premieres 

Leevi Madetoja’sThe Ostrobothnians”, which is known as Finland’s “national opera” will be directed by director Paavo Westerberg. The cast will include Jukka Rasilainen, Ville Rusanen, Jussi Vänttinen, Johanna Lehesvuori, Maria Turunen, Iida Antola, Päivi Nisula, Tuomas Pursio, Aarne Pelkonen, Ilkka Hämäläinen and Mika Pohjonen. The Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera is conducted by Jonas Rannila.

Performance Dates: Nov. 22, 2024-Jan. 4, 2025

Verdi’s “Don Carlos” will be directed by Davide Livermore. Chief Conductor Hannu Lintu conducts a cast that includes Timo Olavi Riihonen, Stefan Pop, Andrea Shin, Andrey Zhilikhovsky, Margarita Gritskova, and Dorothea Spilger.

Performance Dates: Jan. 31-March 6, 2025

Alexander Raskatov and Ian Burton’s “Animal Farm” makes its company debut in a production by Damiano Michieletto. Bassem Akiki will conduct the new work with a cast that includes Koit Soasepp, Michael Gniffke, James Kryshak, Aarne Pelkonen, Karl Laquit, Artem Krutko, Elena Vassilieva, Holly Flack, Mika Pohjonen, and Johanna Rusanen.

Performance Dates: March 28-May 6, 2025

Aulis Sallinen’s “The Horseman” will be directed by Jussi Nikkilä and will star Mika Kares, Miina-Liisa Värelä, Johannes Vatjus, Anna Danik, Timo Olavi Riihonen, Maiju Vaahtoluoto, Ville Rusanen, and Markus Nieminen. Hannu Lintu conducts.

Performance Dates: May 9-28, 2025

Revivals

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” returns to its fourth round of performances after nearly 130 times at the Finnish National Opera. The version seen at the Opera House is directed by Tiina Puumalainen and will star Ville Rusanen, Kevin Greenlaw, Marika Hölttä and Emma Kajander. Nick Davies and Atso Almila conduct.

Performance Dates: August 24-Oct. 23, 2024

Strauss’ “Salome” returns in Christof Loy’s production with Hannu Lintu conducting. The cast includes Tuomas Pursio, Daniel Brenna, Karin Lovelius, Vida Miknevičiūtė, Tuomas Pursio, Nina Fischer and Mihails Čulpajevs.

Performance Dates: Oct. 11-31, 2024

Franz Lehár’s “The Merry Widow” will be conducted by Kurt Kopecky and will star Mari Palo, Johanna Lehesvuori, Jouni Kokora, Iris Candelaria, Jussi Vänttinen, and Markus Nykänen.

Performance Dates: Dec. 13, 2024-April 9, 2025

Concerts

Karita Mattila and Hannu Lintu will perform a program of music by Sofia Gubaidulina, Ludwig van Beethoven, Richard Wagner, and Alexander Scriabin.

Roderick Cox, Kristine Opolais, and Mika Kares will perform music by Dmitry Shostakovich and Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Performance Date: Nov. 5, 2024

Hannu Lintu and Johan Reuter will perform music by Frank Martin and Gustav Mahler.

Performance Date: Jan. 14, 2025

Aivis Greters and Joseph Calleja perform music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Giuseppe Verdi, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
