Kristine Opolais, Michael Volle, Angela Gheorghiu & Evelyn Herlitzius Lead Semperoper Dresden’s 2021-22 Season

The Semperoper Dresden has announced its 2021-22 season featuring new productions, revivals, jung oper, and Chamber works.

Premieres

Gaetano d’Espinosa conducts a new production of Peter Konwitschny Bellini’s “Norma” with Yolanda Auyanet in the title role. The cast will also include Dmytro Popov, Alexandros Stavrakakis, and Stepanka Pucalkova.

Performance Dates: Oct. 2-31, 2021

Ivan Repušić conducts a new production of Verdi’s “Don Carlo” by Vera Nemirova. The cast will be led by Vitalij Kowaljow, Riccardo Massi, Andrei Bondarenko, Alexandros Stavrakakis, Hibla Gerzmava, and Anna Smirnova.

Performance Dates: Oct. 22-Nov. 7, 2021

Emily D’Angelo and Elena Maximova star in Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” with Maxim Mironov, Martin Mitterrutzner, Maurizio Muraro, Marco Filippo Romano, Andrey Zhilikhovsky, Pietro Spagnoli, and Georg Zeppenfeld. The production will be directed by Damiano Michieletto and conducted by Alessandro De Marchi.

Performance Dates: Nov. 6-Dec. 19, 2021

Rasch’s “Die andere Frau” will star Markus Marquardt, Evelyn Herlitzius, Stepanka Pucalkova, and Sussan Deyhim. Michael Wendeberg conducts the new production by Immo Karaman. 

Performance Dates: Jan. 22-Feb. 9, 2022

Katharina Thalbach directs a new production of Verdi’s “Aida” with Krassimira Stoyanova and María José Siri alternating the role. Christian Thielemann and Omer Meir Wellber conduct a cast that also includes Oksana Volkova, Anna Smirnova, Francesco Meli, Jorge de Léon, Georg Zeppenfeld, Vitalij Kowaljow, Quinn Kelsey, and Ambrogio Maestri.

Performance Dates: March 5-July 9, 2022

Kristine Opolais brings her signature Cio-Cio San to a new production of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” directed by Amon Miyamoto. Omer Meir Ellber and Gaetano d’Espinosa conduct and Christa Mayer, Michal Doron, Freddie De Tommaso, and Adrian Timpau round out the cast.

Performance Dates: April 2-May 5, 2022

Dvořák’s “Rusalka” will be directed by Christof Loy with Pavel Černoch as the Prince, Elena Guseva as the Foreign Princess, Olesya Golovneva as Rusalka, Alexandros Stavrakakis as Vodník, and Christa Mayer as Ježibaba. Joana Mallwitz conducts.

Performance Dates: May 7-June 11, 2022

Markus Marquardt, Joseph Dennis, Alexandros Stavrakakis, Katerina von Bennigsen, Aaron Pegram, and Martin-Jan Nijhof lead Shostakovich’s “The Nose” with Peter Konwitschny directing and Petr Popelka conducting.

Performance Dates: July 2-13, 2022

Chamber Opera 

Luciano Chailly’s “Die kahle Sängerin” chamber opera will star Peter Tantsits, Dilara Baştar, Doğukan Kuran, Jennifer Riedel, Martin-Jan Nijhof, and Mariya Taniguchi. Barbora Horáková directs the new production with Pietro Borgonovo conducting. 

Performance Dates: Jan. 14-22, 2022

“Blues Brothers” is set to star Bosse Vogt, Christian Venzke, David Whitley, Vanessa Weiskopf, Gerald Hupach, Bettina Weichert, Vivienne Dejon, Anna Overbeck, Riccardo de Nigris, Christopher Wernecke, and Lukas Raup. Max Renne conducts the new production by Manfred Weiß. 

Performance Dates: April 8-24, 2022

Jung Oper Premiere

Moultaka’s “Drei Fiese Miese Kerle” will be directed by Annika Nitsch and star Christiane Hossfeld, Sarah Alexandra Hudarew, Doğukan Kuran, and Daniel Pastewski. Ilya Ram conducts.

Performance Dates: Oct. 15-26, 2021

Elisabeth Dopheide and Franz Xaver Schlecht star in “Weisse Rose” with Johannes Wulff-Woesten conducting and Stephan Grögler directing.

Revivals

Jordanka Milkova and Ekaterina Semenchuk star in Bizet’s “Carmen” with Najmiddin Mavlyanov, Andrea Carè, Tuuli Takala, Genia Kühmeier, Matthias Henneberg, and Alexey Markov. Louis Lohraseb and Marie Jacquot conduct.

Performance Dates: June 10-July 15, 2022

“Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” will be performed in a double bill. Sonia Ganassi, Teodor Ilincăi, and Markus Marquardt star in Mascagni’s work while Gregory Kunde, Hrachuhí Bassénz, Markus Marquardt, and Sebastian Wartig star in Leoncavallo’s opera. Ivan Repušić conducts.

Heidi Stober, Cecilia Molinari, Katerina von Bennigsen, Ioan Hotea, Mario Cassi, and Omar Montanari lead the ensemble of Mozart’s Così fan tutte.” Omer Meir Wellber conduct.

Eötvös’sDer goldene Drachewill star Mariya Taniguchi, Karina Repova, James Park, and Doğukan Kuran. Marie Jacquot conducts.

Sebastian Wartig, Sabine Brohm, Joseph Dennis, Nikola Hillebrand, Georg Zeppenfeld, and Katerina von Bennigsen star in Lortzing’s “Der Wildschütz” with Johannes Fritzsch conducting.

Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” returns to the stage in time for the holiday season. The production will star Jürgen Müller,  Hrachuhí Bassénz, Mert Süngü, Christa Mayer, Nikola Hillebrand, and Sebastian Wartig with John Fiore conducting.

Klaus Florian Vogt, Camilla Nylund, and Matthias Goerne headline Korngold’s “Die Tote Stadt” with Thomas Guggeis leading in the pit.

Smetana’s Die verkaufte Braut” will be conducted by Srba Dinić and will star Hrachuhí Bassénz, Thomas Blondelle, Tilmann Rönnebeck, Simeon Esper, Matthias Henneberg, and Sabine Brohm.

Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” will star Georg Zeppenfeld, Wilhelm Schwinghammer, Tilmann Rönnebeck, Julia Sitkovetsky, Maria Perlt, Christina Poulitsi, Rocío Pérez, Mariya Taniguchi, Sophie Karthäuser, Elbenita Kajtazi, Tuuli Takala, Beomjin Kim, Sebastian Kohlhep, Martin Mitterrutzner, Joseph Dennis, Mauro Peter, Christoph Pohl, Sebastian Wartig, Bernhard Hansky, Julia Muzychenko, and Katerina von Bennigsen. Michael Balke, Jonathan Darlington, Michele Gamba, Christoph Gedschold, and Gábor Káli conduct.

Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail” will star Nikola Hillebrand, Gloria Rehm, Martin Mitterrutzner, Aaron Pegram, Tobias Kehrer, and Jaron Löwenberg. Georg Fritzsch conducts.

Peter Mattei brings his signature “Don Giovanni” in Mozart’s masterpiece. He will be joined by Alexandros Stavrakakis, Vanessa Goikoetxea, Tuuli Takala, Benjamin Hulett, Aga Mikolaj, Markus Marquardt, Erwin Schrott, Martin-Jan Nijhof, and Anke Vondung with Omer Meir Wellber conducting.

Doris Soffel, Lise Lindstrom, Allison Oakes, Jürgen Müller, and Markus Marquardt stars in Strauss’ Elektra with Christoph Gedschold conducting.

Stephen Gould leads Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” with Georg Zeppenfeld, Michael Volle, Joseph Dennis, Alexandros Stavrakakis, Malin Byström, and Elena Zhidkova. Marc Albrecht conducts.

Saioa Hernández, Elena Stikhina, Angela Gheorghiu, Elena Guseva, and Maria Agresta share the role of Puccini’s “Tosca” with Tomislav Mužek, Dmytro Popov, Stefano la Colla, Andrea Carè, Andrzej Dobber, Markus Marquardt, and Alexey Markov. Stefano Ranzani and Domingo Hindoyan conducts.
