The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has announced an upcoming presentation of Leoncavallo’s rarely performed operatic jewel “Zingari” on Dec. 3, 2021.

Based on Pushkin’s poem “The Gypsies,” the opera presents a tale of passion, jealousy and the tumultuous throes of unrequited love. Soprano Krassimira Stoyanova, tenor Arsen Soghomonyan, baritone Stephen Gaertner, and bass-baritone Łukasz Goliński star alongside conductor Carlo Rizzi, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Opera Rara Chorus.

Opera Rara discovered the original vocal score of the opera and commissioned Martin Fitzpatrick, English National Opera’s Head of Music, to reorchestrate the missing passages so that the performance could be brought back to stage.

The concert is a co-production with Opera Rara.
