Korngold Headlines Bard Summerscape 2019

The Bard Summerscape 2019 festival has been announced.

This year the festival will celebrate its 30th anniversary season and will focus on “Korngold and His World.” There will be film screenings, opera, recitals, and dance.

For this article, we will only concentrate on the operatic and vocal showcases.

Opera 

Christian Räth directs the American premiere of Korngold’s “The Miracle of Heliane” (“Das Wunder der Heliane”) with American Symphony Orchestra performing under the direction of Leon Botstein.

Soprano Ausrine Stundyte will make a rare U.S. appearance in the title role, which she recently gave in Belgium. She will be joined by Daniel Brenna and Alfred Walker.

Performance dates: July 26- August 4, 2019

Bard Music Festival 

The first program of the festival is set to include Korngold’s Der Schneemann, Piano Quintet in E Major, Cello Concerto in C Major, Overture to The Sea Hawk (1940) and songs by the composer.

Performance Dates: August 9, 2019

Program six entitled “Operetta’s America” will showcase selections by Strauss II and Korngold’s “Rosalinda,” Fall and Korngold’s “Rosen aus Florida,” Fall and Kern’s “The Dollar Princess,” Oscar Straus’ “Hochzeit in Hollywood,” Kálmán’s “Die Herzogin von Chicago,” and Abraham’s “Die Blume von Hawaii.”

Performance Dates: August 11, 2019

Korngold’s Symphony in F-sharp Major and The Passover Psalm headline Program Nine. It will also include Hindemith’s Symphonia Serena and Strauss’ Four Last Songs.

Performance Dates: August 17, 2019

Program eleven will showcase Korngold’s Narrenlieder, String Quartet No. 3 in D Major, and Sonett für Wien.

Performance Dates: August 17, 2019

Korngold’s “Die Tote Stadt” closes the Summerscape festival in a semi-staged performance.
