Korean National Opera Opens Applications for Vocal Competition

The Korean National Opera Company is set to host its 24th Vocal Competition.

The preliminary round is scheduled for Aug. 6 and 7, at the National Arts Group Performance Practice Center. Those moving forward will perform in a concert with the Korean Orchestra led by Jang Yoon-seong. The final round will take place Aug. 20, at the Gangdong Arts Center Grand Theater.

The grand prize winner will receive the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award and a cash prize of 10 million KRW, while the gold prize winner will receive the Sae-ai Woon-hyung Cultural Foundation Award and a cash prize of 7 million KRW. The silver and bronze prize winners will receive a National Opera Company trophy and cash prizes of 5 million KRW and 3 million KRW, respectively. Conductors Yuko Amanuma and Lu Jia are among the jury.

Choi Sang-ho, the director of the National Opera Company, said in a press release, “This competition goes beyond a simple competition and provides a practical opportunity for vocalists to perform on actual stages. We will work to develop it into an internationally renowned competition in the future. We look forward to the interest and participation of many promising singers from home and abroad.”

Singers under the age of 35 are invited to apply. The application is open now, until July 23.
