Kentucky Opera Announces 2023-24 Season Lineup

“This season has something for everyone,” said General Director/CEO Barbara Lynne Jamison in an official press statement. “Kentucky Opera has a history of blending new works with the classical canon. Producing an all-English season allows us to invite even more audiences in as we continue the work to break down the historical barriers of this artform. The stories we produce feature some of the finest emerging voices in the world. This will be a season that truly sparks discovery, joy, and connection among our community.”
The season will open with its “Amplify Songs of Justice” concert. Held at the Kentucky Opera Center for Cultural Health, this event will also launch Louisville’s Juneteenth Jubilee.
Performance Date: June 10, 2023
Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel” will return to the company’s stage for the first time since 2010, with the Kentucky Opera Youth Chorus to feature in this production.
Performance Dates: September 29 & October 1, 2023
The holiday season will see a production of “All is Calm, The Christmas Truce of 1914,” written by Peter Rothstein. This work recounts a WWI tale of bravery using diaries and letters from the Western Front, mixed with traditional carols and historical songs.
Performance Dates: December 15 & 17, 2023
In homage to the leap year of 2024, KO will present Gilbert & Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance.”
Performance Dates: February 16 & 18, 2024
The season will continue into April with Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed’s “As One.”
Performance Dates: April 12 & 14, 2024
The Youth Opera Project will also present Dean Burry’s operatic adaptation of Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.” It comes as the culmination of the 10-month program that teaches kids 8 to 18 the foundations of singing, acting, and stagecraft.
