The Kennedy Center board has voted Thursday to move forward with President Donald Trump’s plan to close the building for renovations.

The New York Times is reporting that the Trump loyalist board will close the center but will keep the Reach, a newer addition to the campus, open for limited programming and as an active memorial to John F. Kennedy.

The decision will have to be approved by Federal Judge Cooper who previously had denied the closure due to the lack of a vote from the board and will until to share the plan.

The board met on Thursday in a virtual call after having received a 163-page plan for a $250 million “renewal” project including structural repairs, new marble floors, $11.8 million in acoustical improvements, $7 million in public restroom renovations, and a plan to temporarily relocate the 3,000-pound bronze bust of Kennedy to another building on campus. The Construction firm JLL targets a reopening in summer of 2028.

In addition to shuttering the building the board announced that it would inscribe Donald J. Trump’s name on the building beneath the main signage. According to the resolution approved by the Trump-allied board, the inscription underneath the institution’s name would read: “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.”

No information on the National Symphony Orchestra’s fate has yet to be announced.

Since President Trump took over the Kennedy Center, the performing arts complex has been under investigation for mishandling of funds and has been renamed to include Trump’s name only to shortly be ordered to take his name off by a federal judge. It has also seen ticket sales plummet amidst the cancelation of performances by high profile artists.
