Karita Mattila, Thomas Hampson, Matthias Goerne Among Stars of Verbier Festival 2019

The Verbier Festival has announced the programming for its 26th edition. While there are undeniably a plethora of incredible performances of all kinds to be found throughout the many weeks of this famed festival, the aim of this article will be to focus mainly on vocal and operatic performances.

Baritone Thomas Quasthoff will appear alongside guitarist Wolfgang Meyer and Trombonist Shawn Grocott in a concert of jazz standards.

Countertenor Jakub Jósef Orlinski joins forces with pianist Michal Biel in music by Handel, Purcell, Szymanowski, Baird, and Lukaszewski.

Performance Date: July 21, 2019

Audiences will get a chance to see “Die Frau Ohne Schatten” in concert with a cast that includes Brandon Jovanovich, Nina Stemme, and Matthias Goerne. Valery Gergiev conducts the Verbier Festival Orchestra.

Baritone Thomas Hampson joins forces with violinist Daniel Hope, among others for a program that features music by Mendelssohn, Bach, Jurmann, Heymann, Eisler, and Schulhoff, among others.

Famed baritone Matthias Goerne will join forces with the Verbier Festival Orchestra, under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst for a performance of Brahms’ “Vier ernste Gesänge.” Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor will also appear on the program.

Baritone Thomas Hampson joins forces with pianist Wolfram Rieger for a program of music by Gustav Mahler and Hugo Wolf.

Performance Date: July 28, 2019

Soprano Karita Mattila joins forces with Evgeny Kissin and Leonidas Kavakos for a program that features music by Henri Duparc, Brahms, and Strauss. The violinist and pianist will also play Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 9 in A Major, Op. 47 “Kreutzer.”

Stanislav Kochanovsky will lead the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra in a performance of “Die Zauberflöte,” which will feature singers from the Verbier Festival Academy.

Maestro Fabio Luisi takes on Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in C Minor with Golda Schultz and Ekaterina Gubanova as his soloists.
