Karah Son, Samantha Hankey & David Portillo Lead Detroit Opera’s 2023-24 Season

The Detroit Opera has announced its 2023-24 season featuring a wide array of repertory.

Matthew Ozawa directs a new production of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” with Kensho Watanabe conducting. Karah Son sings the title role alongside Eric Taylor, Kristen Choi, and Nmon Ford

Performance Dates: Oct. 7-15, 2023

The company is set to present the site-specific operatic experience composer John Cage’s “Europeras 3 & 4,” which breaks apart European opera tradition and reassembles it as a collage.

Performance Dates: March 2024

Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek’s “Breaking the Waves” will be conducted by Stephanie Childress. The cast will include Sharleen Joynt, Ben Taylor, Elizabeth van Os, Gabrielle Barkidjija, David Portillo, Nathan Stark, and Robert Mellon.

Performance Dates: April 2024

Janáček’s “The Cunning Little Vixen” will be directed by Yuval Sharon with Roberto Kalb conducting. Michael Sumuel, Samantha Hankey, Mané Galoyan, Alex Rosen, David Cangelosi, Andrew Potter, and Rehanna Thelwell star.
