Kanye West To World Premiere Second Opera ‘Mary’ This Weekend

Rapper Kanye West has announced a new opera that is set to premiere on Dec. 8, 2019 in Miami.

West made the announcement via Twitter and included a verse from the Bible.

“And the angel said unto her: fear not, Mary: For thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus,” he wrote.

“Mary” will be presented at the Miami Marine Stadium and will be directed by Vanessa Beecroft, who also took on “Nebuchadnezzar.”

It is safe to say that the work will undeniably follow up his first opera “Nebuchadnezzar” in its religious and thematic material though what will be most interesting is seeing if it will differ structurally or evolve from that previous effort which was, from a dramatic standpoint, more oratorio than opera. Given the quick turnaround (the two works premiered in less than a month) and the continued involvement of West’s Sunday Service Choir, is it likely to be very similar in content.

Of course, this being West, audiences might be in for some surprises.
