Creative Time has launched a Kickstarter campaign to present composer Kamala Sankaram’s new opera “The Last Stand” this July in New York City.

The company is aiming to recoup $25,000.

The project will be presented in two parts. First up will be a site-specific opera for and about trees, using vibrational tones familiar to tree communications. She will also showcase a multi-channel sound installation where narrative vibrations are translated into a soundscape for humans.

The aim is to show how little humans know about other species on earth and underscores the connection between humans and trees. The duration of the opera will be relative to the lifespan of the tree protagonist.

Creative Time is a nonprofit known for over 350 art projects since its founding in 1974. Sankaram is Creative Time’s second Emerging Artist Open Call recipient whose other notable works include “Looking at You” and “all decisions made by consensus,” an opera performed live over Zoom.
