Julieth Lozano, Katie Bray, Tristan Hambleton Headline Vache Baroque’s ‘Le Carnaval de Venise’
By David SalazarVache Baroque is set to present Campra’s “Le Carnaval de Venise” this August.
Starting on August 30 and 31st, with additional performances on Sept. 6 and 7, the company will celebrate its fifth anniversary with a cast that stars Katie Bray, Julieth Lozano, Tristan Hambleton, Themba Mvula, and Giuseppe Pellingra.
“Colombia has many wonderful carnivals, two recognised by UNESCO, Barranquilla’s carnival and pasto’s carnival of black and white people. A truly exuberant, colourful showcase with wonderful artisan workmanship throughout the parades, as well as the charisma and energy that is an insignia of us Colombians,” Colombian-native Lozano told OperaWire via email. “So when Vache Baroque approached me about this little known opera by Campra – ‘Le Carnival de Venise’ – I was thrilled especially when they were going to set it as a circus opera replete with a big top tent, aerial acrobatics, foot archery, kabuki silk wizardry and more, masterminded by circus artist Rebecca Solomon in conjunction with director James Hurley.”
Jonathan Darbourne, co-founder of Vache Baroque, conducts the opera.
“Everyone loves a circus! We’ve wanted to mix circus elements into a show for a while and Campra’s funny and fabulously inventive opera seemed the perfect fit,” Darbourne stated per an official press release issued by the company. “The music is wonderful, endlessly inventive, and full of surprises, just like a carnival. Earlier this year, we ended our Out of the Deep programme (which we’ll be repeating in October at the Brighton Early Music Festival) with the sublime last movement of Campra’s Requiem. It’s brilliant to be filling our Summer with his stylish and captivating theatrical music. In my opinion, an under-the-radar genius of the era.”
