Julianna DiGiacomo To Replace Sonya Yoncheva In ‘Otello’ At Met Opera for One Performance

By Francisco Salazar

Per the Met’s press office DiGiacomo has always been scheduled to perform the Dec. 28 performance.

Sonya Yoncheva will no longer perform the Dec. 28 performance of Verdi’s “Otello” at the Metropolitan Opera.

The soprano’s team announced via Twitter that she would no longer appear in the performance. The soprano is slated to be at the Opéra de Paris for New Year’s Eve on Dec. 30 and 31.

As a result, Julianna DiGiacomo will perform as Desdémona that day. The soprano recently performed at the Opera de Oviedo and the Gran Teatre del Liceo and also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

DiGiacomo made her Met debut in 2007 as Clotilde in “Norma” and has since performed “Il Trovatore” and “Stiffelio.”

DiGiacomo joins Stuart Skelton and Zeljko Lucic alongside Gustavo Dudamel.

“Otello” opens on Dec. 14 and closes on Jan. 10, 2019.
