By David Salazar

Juilliard Opera is set to present a double bill of Puccini operas starting on April 18, 2023.

The institution will showcase fully staged productions of “Suor Angelica” and “Gianni Schicchi” with students from the Ellen Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts.

The showcase will also feature the Juilliard Orchestra. Daniela Candillari conducts and John Giampietro directs. Robert Kahn is the assistant conductor with Jen Pitt taking on the role of the assistant director. Music preparation for the production was by Diane Richardson with Language preparation by Stefano Baldasseroni. John Arida is the chorus master. The production will feature scenic design by Alexis Distler, costume design by Audrey Nauman, and lighting design by Kate Ashton.

“We have set both operas in the same formidable space—a living vessel that evolves throughout the two performances,” Giampietro said in an official press statement. “The stage transforms from the cold confinement and deep tragedy of Suor Angelica into a luminous arena of wild joy for ‘Gianni Schicchi.’”

Juilliard Opera will present two additional performances set for April 20 and 22, 2023.
