Juilliard Opera presents “Later the Same Evening” as the first mainstage production for the 2023-24 season.

Composer John Musto and Pulitzer Prize-winning librettist Mark Campbell’s opera is directed by Alison Moritz in her Juilliard Opera debut. Joseph Colaneri conducts 11 students from Juilliard’s Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts performing with the Juilliard Orchestra.

“Later the Same Evening” is inspired by five paintings by New York artist Edward Hopper including “Room in New York” (1932) and “Automat” (1927). The three fully staged performances imagine the lives of the figures in these paintings and connect them as characters on a single evening in New York City in 1932.

The production will run from Nov. 12 through 17 at Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater and will be livestreamed.
