The Finnish National Opera and Ballet has announced its 2023-24 season.
First up is “Das Lied von der Erde” with mezzo-soprano Tuija Knihtilä and tenor Tuomas Katajala as the soloists. Ville Matvejeff conducts.

Hannu Lintu conducts Verdi’s “Requiem” with soprano Silja Aalto, tenor Mika Pohjonen, mezzo Maiju Vaahtoluoto, and bass Matti Turunen as the soloists.
Performance Date: August 10, 2023
The Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a concert featuring Lili Boulanger’s “Faust et Hélène” cantata and Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. Soloists include Tuomas Katajala, Miina-Liisa Värelä, and Stefan Astakhov. Hannu Lintu conducts.

The company will present a mini-opera – “Carmen” – in 30 minutes with two singers and two musicians.

There will also be an “Opera & Ballet in Action” workshop for children. The showcase will take approximately 90 minutes.

“Don Giovanni” will star Tuomas Pursio, Johanna Nylund, Aurora Marthens, Koit Soasepp, Marko Nykänen, Minna-Leena Lahiti, Elisaveta Rimkevitch, Mihails Cupajevs, and Johan Krogius, among others. Jussi Nikkilä directs.
Performance Dates: Sept. 29 – Oct. 27, 2023
“Madama Butterfly” will be conducted by Harri Karri and directed by Yoshi Oïda. Hye-Youn Lee stars as Cio-Cio San. She is joined by Mika Pohjonen, Jeni Packalen, and Jussi Merikanto.

Kurt Kopecky conducts “Die Fledermaus” with a cast starring Markus Nykänen, Jussi Myllys, Helena Juntunen, Johanna Lehesvuori, and Elli Vallinoja, among others.
Performance Dates: Nov. 24, 2023 – Jan. 5, 2024
For “Dialogues des Carmélites,” audiences will see Marjukka Tepponen and Tuuli Takala alternate as Blanche. Other cast members include Iris Candelaria, Sanna Iljin, Pauliina Linnosaari, and Kirsi Tiihonen, among others. Hannu Lintu and James Sherlock conduct a production by Olivier Py.
Performance Dates: Jan. 26 – Feb. 23, 2024
Francesca Caccini’s “The Isle of Alcina” will star Erica Back, Isabella Shaw, Juho Punkeri, Tuuli Lindeberg, Linnéa Sundfær Cassely, Sirkku Rintamäki, David Hackston, Mats Lillhannus, Taavi Oramo, and Jussi Linnanmäki. Sinna Virtanen directs and Marianna Henriksson conducts.
Performance Dates: Feb. 1 – 3, 2024
“Eugene Onegin” will be conducted by Alan Buribayev and directed by Marco Arturo Marelli.
Performance Date: Feb. 9 – March 19, 2024
“Simon Boccanegra” will star Vladimir Stoyanov, Joyce El-Khoury, Mihails Culpajevs, and Riccardo Zanellato. Pietro Rizzo conducts a production by Pierre Audi.
Performance Date: March 22 – April 26, 2024
Closing out the season will be “Götterdämmerung.” Daniel Brenna, Tuomas Pursio, Jukka Rasilainen, Rúni Brattaberg, Johanna Rusanen, Reetta Haavisto, and Tuija Knihtilä star. Hannu Lintu conducts a production by Anna Kelo.
