Joyce El-Khoury Headlines The Hungarian Premiere Of ‘Sardanapalo’

By Francisco Salazar
The 2020 Spring Festival in Budapest is set to present the Hungarian premiere of Liszt’s opera “Sardanapalo.”
The premiere will star Joyce El-Khoury, Airam Hernández, and Oleksandr Pushniak with Giampaolo Bisanti conducting the Staatskapelle Weimar.
The opera was discovered 30 years after the death of the composer which was discovered at Weimar’s Goethe and Schiller Archive. David Trippett, a musicologist at the University of Cambridge, reconstructed the piece from the manuscript, and also wrote an orchestration for it, and this is the version that will be performed in Budapest.
The first act of the opera had its world premiere in 2019 in Weimar and was recorded and released on CD. El-Khoury starred in that performance.
The opera will be performed April 16, 2020 at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall.
