Joseph Calleja Cancels Vienna’s ‘Rigoletto’

By Francisco Salazar

Joseph Calleja has canceled performances of Verdi’s “Rigoletto” at the Wiener Staatsoper.

The tenor announced via social media that due to illness he would not be able to perform. He said, “Absolutely gutted to have to cancel my performances of the duke in my beloved Vienna. I expect to make a full recovery and resume with my performance in London next week for my Wimbledon performance! So sorry to disappoint and for any inconvenience caused!”

As a result, Attilio Glaser will perform the role on May 9. The performances on May 12 and 16 are still to be determined.

This is the second major cancelation for Vienna’s revival of “Rigoletto.” Last month Aida Garifullina canceled the role of Gilda citing fatigue.

Glaser joins a cast that includes Christopher Maltman, Andrea Carroll, Jongmin Park, and Nadia Krasteva with Giampaolo Bisanti conducting.
