Legendary tenor Jose Carerras is set to receive the ad personam honor from the the Asamblea de Ópera XXI, la Asocición de Teatros, and Spanish Opera theaters.

After a meeting on Nov. 3, 2018 in La Coruña,  it was decided that Carreras will receive the honor for his contributions to the opera world.

The tenor had a legendary career, which has included performing at the world’s greatest theaters, touring as part of The Three Tenors and performing an extensive and diverse repertoire.

The award will also recognize his humanitarian achievements, which include his foundation the José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation.

Carreras is currently on tour in Japan as he continues his farewell concerts. Last season Carreras gave his final concert at Carnegie Hall and spoke to OperaWire, noting the tour would take a few years and that “there is not too much time left for a big world tour.”
