Jonathan Tetelman Cancels Opening ‘Madama Butterfly’ at Deutsche Oper Berlin Due to COVID-19

Jonathan Tetelman has canceled the Sept. 15 performance of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” due to COVID-19.

The tenor took to social media and said, “I am sorry to report that I am unwell and have recently tested positive for COVID-19. Unfortunately I ma forced to cancel my ‘Madama Butterfly’ appearance at the Deutsche Oper on Sept. 15. I’m greatly looking forward to the performance on Sept. 21 Thank you all for your kindness and understanding.”

As a result, Rodrigo Porras Garulo will take over the role of Benjamin F. Pinkerton. Garulo will make his house debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and has performed at Oper Köln, De National Opera Amsterdam, Oper Frankfurt, Glyndebourne Festival and the BBC Proms, among others.

He joins a cast that includes Elena Stikhina, Karis Tucker, and Markus Brück. Francesco Ivan Ciampa conducts.
