Jonas Kaufmann and Sondra Radvanovsky have made Teatro Real history.
During the July 19 performance, the two singers sang encores of their respective arias, “Vissi d’arte” and “E Lucevan le Stelle.” It is the first time in the theater’s history where two arias are encored in the same performance.
Radvanovsky had already made history during the run of “Tosca,” encoring five of six performances since her July 4 opening night. Her final performance of the run will be on July 22 and if she encores during that performance, she will have sung a total of 12 “Vissi d’artes” during the run (seven performances overall).
Meanwhile, it was Kaufmann’s first opera performance at the Teatro Real since 1999. The tenor has performed at the theater in recitals and concerts in recent years. Kaufmann is one of the great exponents of Cavaradossi in “Tosca” and has encored the aria before most famously at the Wiener Staatsoper during a performance with Angela Gheorghiu.
