The holidays are in the air and with them come a number of major opera performances and productions from around the world. Those who want to get into the holiday spirit have a lot of options available this week, while those seeking out some more traditional opera experiences from the comfort of their homes also have a lot to look forward to.

Here are our top 10 operas to stream this week!

The Magic Flute – The Dallas Opera (NOW)

The Dallas Opera presents Mozart’s final masterpiece with the company’s music director Emmanuel Villaume leading Sir Peter Hall’s famed production. The revival starred Paolo Fanale as Tamino with Andrea Carroll as Pamina. Jeni Houser was the Queen of the Night while Sean Michael Plumb starred as Papageno; all of these artists made their The Dallas Opera debuts in this production. Rounding out the cast was bass Morris Robinson as Sarastro.

Fragments – musicAeterna (NOW)

Famed conductor Teodor Currentzis recently recorded the Prelude to Act three and Violetta’s famous Aria “Addio del Passato Bei Sogni Ridenti” alongside Russian soprano Nadezhda Pavlova in a unique audiovisual experience that OperaWire’s Polina Lyapustina stated openly, “I simply haven’t heard anything better this year.”

Las Cinco Lunas de Lorca – Los Angeles Opera (NOW)

The Los Angeles Opera will launch its digital shorts series with this opera by Gabriela Lena Frank, which explores the assassination of poet Federico García Lorca. The project was directed by Matthew Diamond and features dancer Irene Rodríguez, countertenor Jacob Ingbar, pianist Nicholas Roehler, and members of the Los Angeles Opera Choir.

Das Verratene Meer – Vienna State Opera (Dec. 14)

The Vienna State Opera will premiere a production of Hans Werner Henze’s unique work with a cast that includes Vera-Lotte Boecker, Bo Skovhus, Josh Lovell, Erik Van Heyningen, Kangmin Justin Kim, Stefan Astakhov, Martin Häßler. Simone Young conducts the live performance.

Advent Concert – Bayerische Staatsoper (Dec. 14)

Famed tenor Jonas Kaufmann will headline a holiday showcase featuring Mirjam Mesak, Corinna Scheurle, Johannes Moritz, Milan Siljanov, and Caspar Singh under the direction of Vladimir Jurowski. The program will feature music by Corelli, Mozart, Tartini, Bach, Praetorius, and a folk song.

Gala – Teatro Carlo Felice (Dec. 15)

The concert will be streamed on the company’s website with Daniele Callegari conducting the Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice and soloists Serena Gamberoni, Angela Nisi, Francesco Meli, and Luca Salsi.

The program will include music by Leoncavallo, Puccini, Ponchielli, and Giordano from operas “Pagaliacci,” “Edgar” “Andrea Chenier,” “Turandot,” “La Gioconda,” “Le Vili” and “La Boheme.”

Lohengrin – Metropolitan Opera (Dec. 15)

Wagner’s romantic epic has not been performed at the Metropolitan Opera in what seems like forever. And to this point, this remains the only video recording that the famed company has released of the work to date. And it’s a fantastic one to boot. Led by Peter Hofmann in the title role, Eva Marton and Leonie Rysanek are arguably the stars here in a cast rounded out by Leif Roar and John Macurdy.

Joseph’s Carol – Oxford Philharmonic (Dec. 18)

Sir Bryn Terfel will perform in the world premiere John Rutter’s “Joseph’s Carol,” a work written in tribute to the Oxford Vaccine Group, the Jenner Institute, and the RECOVERY team for their work throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The performance will be a part of a celebratory concert featuring a program that will also include Elgar’s Chanson de Matin,” William Henry Monk’s “Abide With Me,” Rodger and Hammerstein’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” Rutter’s “Look to the Day,” and Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus.”

The Royal Opera Christmas Concert – The Royal Opera House (Dec. 17, 18)

Audiences will get a chance to check out a holiday showcase featuring scenes from Rossini’s “La Cenerentola,” Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel” as well as extracts from Puccini’s “La Bohème,” Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” and Vaughan William’s “Fantasia on Christmas Carols. Soloists include Jennifer Davis, Hanna Hipp, Jeremy White, and Roderick Williams, as well as Stephanie Wake-Edwards and Dominic Sedgwick.

Cendrillon – Komische Oper Berlin / OperaVision (Dec. 20)

OperaVision will stream a 2016 production of Massenet’s famed opera in a production directed by Damiano Michieletto starring Nadja Mchantaf, Agnes Zwierko, Karolina Gumos, Mari Eriksmoen, Mirka Wagner, Zoe Kiss, and Werner van Mechelen among others.
