Jonas Kaufmann, Diana Damrau & Elīna Garanča Highlight Opéra de Paris’s 2020-21 Season

The Opéra National de Paris has announced its 2020-21 season featuring a number of new productions revivals. Here is a look.

Domingo Hindoyan and Keri-Lynn Wilson lead performances of Bizet’s “Carmen” with Clémentine Margaine, Elīna Garanča, and Varduhi Abrahamyan sharing the title role and Vittorio Grigolo and Charles Castronovo as Don José. Adam Plachetka and Lucas Meachem alternate as Escamillo, while Nadine Sierra and Valentina Naforniţă share Michaela.

Performance Dates: Sept. 12-Dec. 31, 2020

Thomas Hengelbrock conducts Gluck’s “Iphigenie en Tauride” in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s production. Joyce DiDonato stars in the title role with Florian Sempey, Stanislas de Barbeyrac, Laurent Naouri, and Christophe Gay.

Performance Dates: Sept. 17-Oct. 13, 2020

Rimsky-Korsakov’s “La Fille de Neige” is set to be conducted by Mikhaïl Tatarnikov with a cast that includes Aida Garifullina, Yuriy Mynenko, Oksana Dyka, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Stanislav Trofimov, Vasily Gorshkov, Carole Wilson, Vasily Efimov, René Barbera, Vladislav Sulimsky, and Andrii Goniukov. 

Performance Dates: Oct. 22-Nov. 10, 2020

The Ring Cycle 

Calixto Bieto ends his Ring Cycle with new productions of “Siegfried” and “Götterdämmerung.” “Siegfried” will star Andreas Schager, Gerhard Siegel, Iain Paterson, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Dimitry Ivashchenko, Wiebke Lehmkuhl, Julie Fuchs, and Martina Serafin.

“Götterdämmerung” will star Andreas Schager, Johannes Martin Kränzle, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Ain Anger, Ricarda Merbeth, Anna Gabler, and Sarah Connolly. Philippe Jordan conducts.

Siegfried Dates: Oct 10-18, 2020
Götterdämmerung Dates: Nov. 13-21, 2020

The Ring Cycle is set to star Iain Paterson as Wotan, Ekaterina Gubanova as Fricka, Jonas Kaufmann as Siegmund, Eva-Maria Westbroek as Seiglinde, Martina Serafin and Ricarda Merbeth as Brunnhilde, Andreas Schager as Siegfried, Anna Gabler as Gutrune and Freia, and Sarah Connolly as Waltraute.

Lauri Vasar, Matthew Newlin, Norbert Ernst, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Gerhard Siegel, Wilhelm Schwinghammer, Dimitry Ivashchenko, John Relyea, Jochen Schmeckenbecher, Dimitry Ivashchenko, Wiebke Lehmkuhl, Julie Fuchs, Johannes Martin Kränzle, and Ain Anger.

Cornelius Meister conducts Mozart’s “Die Zauberflote” with Cyrille Dubois, Stanislas de Barbeyrac, Alex Esposito, Florian Sempey, Mélissa Petit, Nicolas Testé, Julie Fuchs, Christiane Karg, Sabine Devieilhe, and Nina Minasyan.

Performance Dates: Jan. 12-Feb 22, 2021

Nicola Luisotti conducts Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” with Brian Jagde and Yusif Eyvazov sharing the title role, Luca Salsi and Artur Ruciński alternating as Di Luna, and Krassimira Stoyanova and Marina Rebeka sharing the role of Leonora. Daniela Barcellona and Krzysztof Bączyk round out the cast.

Performance Dates: Jan. 21-Feb. 26, 2021

Diana Damrau headlines R. Strauss’ “Capriccio” with a cast includes Simon Keenlyside, Pavol Breslik, Audun Iversen, Günther Groissböck, Ekaterina Gubanova, Graham Clark, Christina Gansch, Xabier Anduaga, and Luke Stoker. Marc Albrecht conducts.

Performance Dates: Jan. 26-Feb. 21, 2021

Michele Mariotti conducts Verdi’s “Aida” with Sondra Radvanovsky, Elena Stikhina, and Jennifer Rowley sharing the title role. The opera  will also star Soloman Howard, Elīna Garanča, Ksenia Dudnikova, Jonas Kaufmann, Piero Pretti, Dmitry Belosselskiy, Ludovic Tézier, and Claudio Sgura.

Performance Dates: Feb. 12-March 27, 2021

Benjamin Bernheim and Stephen Costello star in the title role of Gounod’s “Faust” with Ildar Abdrazakov, John Relyea, Florian Sempey, Ermonela Jaho, Anita Hartig, and Michèle Losier. Lorenzo Viotti conducts Tobias Kratzer’s new production.

Performance Dates: March 16-April 21, 2021

Oksana Lyniv conducts Janáček’s “Jenufa” in a new production by Krzysztof Warlikowski. The production stars Asmik Grigorian in the title role, Elena Zaremba, Pavel Černoch, Stanislas de Barbeyrac, and Michael Kraus.

Performance Dates: April 9-30, 2021

Puccini’s “Tosca” returns to the stage with Giacomo Sagripanti and Dan Ettinger conducting Aleksandra Kurzak and Maria Agresta in the title role, Roberto Alagna and Michael Fabiano as Cavaradossi and Željko Lučić and Ludovic Tézier as Scarpia.

Performance Dates: May 6-June 25, 2021

Daniel Barenboim and Oksana Lyniv conduct a new production of Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades” by Dmitri Tcherniakov. The cast includes Brandon Jovanovich, John Lundgren, Étienne Dupuis, Alexey Dolgov, Gábor Bretz, Violeta Urmana, Asmik Grigorian, and Clémentine Margaine.
