Jonas Kaufmann Cancels Final ‘Tosca’ Performances

By Francisco Salazar

Jonas Kaufmann has canceled the final two performances of Puccini’s “Tosca” at the Opéra de Paris.

The tenor announced via social media that due to medical reasons he will not be able to perform. He stated, “I am so very sorry not to have been able to come to Paris to sing ‘Tosca’ for a public so very special to me. I had hoped to be able to return for at least some of the performances but my medical team has insisted that I extend my convalescence somewhat longer. I would never want to disappoint all the people who honor me by wishing to hear me, but unfortunately we singers are also athletes, and even a slight disturbance such as the one I have experienced can prevent us from performing at our best. Since it is of course only my best, which I would ever wish to present to the public in Paris, as well as everywhere else, I am unfortunately obliged to withdraw. I look forward to being back with you as soon as possible and thank you all again for your kindness, well-wishes, and understanding.”

As a result, the role of Cavaradossi will be performed by Vittorio Grigolo on June 1 and by Marcelo Puente on June 5.

Earlier this month Kaufmann suffered a violent coughing attack that forced him out the opening performances.

The tenor is now set to return in June for a Rolex gala at the Teatro alla Scala.
