Jonas Kaufmann, Anja Kampe, Brigitte Geller, Sandrine Piau Headline Gstaad Menuhin Festival & Academy 2022

The Gstaad Menuhin Festival & Academy has announced its sixth annual festival for 2022.

The theme for this year is “Vienna – Beethoven Delayed 2022.” For the purposes of this article, our focus will be on the vocal and operatic performances.

René Jacobs leads the Freiburger Barockorchester and the Rias Kammerchor Berlin in a performance of Beethoven’s “Missa solemnis.” The showcase will star Brigitte Christensen, Sophie Harmsen, Maximilian Schmitt, and Johannes Weisser.

Performance Date: July 15 & 16, 2022

Céline Scheen, Philippe Jaroussky,  and L’Arpeggiata, under conductor Christina Pluhar, will perform music by Theile, Bach, Bütner, Ritter, Schütz, and Erlebach, among others.

Performance Date: July 17, 2022

Conductor Kevin Griffith leads the Gstaad Festival Orchestra and the Seoul Cheongchun Choir in music by Schumann, Bizet, and some traditional Korean songs. Baritone Hyun Ho Lee will be the soloist on the evening.

Performance Date: July 31, 2022

Jaap Van Zweden will lead the Gstaad Festival Orchestra in a performance of “Fidelio.” Jonas Kaufmann, Anja Kampe, Falk Struckmann, Andreas Bauer Kanabas, Christina Landshamer, Matthias Winckhler, and Patrick Grahl star.

Tenor Daniel Behle and pianist Christian Koch join forces for music by Strauss II, Lehár, and Stolz, among others.

Performance Date: August 12, 2022

Vasily Petrenko will lead the Zürcher Sing-Akademie in a performance of Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy alongside pianist Sergei Babayan. The showcase will also feature Beethoven’s Triple Concerto and Symphony No. 5.

Performance Date: August 20, 2022

Soprano Brigitte Geller and pianist Manuel Lange will present music by Ullmann, Zeisl, von Zemlinsky, and Korngold, among others.

Performance Date: August 23, 2022

The Gstaad Vocal Academy will perform a final concert.

Performance Date: August 27, 2022

Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques will present “Die Zauberflöte” with a cast starring Sandirne Piau, Sebastian Kohlhepp, Rocío Pérez, Simon Shimbambu, and Hicholas Mulroy, among others.

Tenor Juan Diego Flórez and the Sinfonía por el Perú under maestro Roberto González-Monjas will present music by Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, de Fallla, Torroba, Giménez, and Robles, among many others.

Performance Date: August 31, 2022

 Soprano Chen Reiss will join forces with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra under Alain Altinoglu for Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. The concert will also feature Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, interpreted by Bomsori Kim.

Performance Date: Sept. 2, 2022

Closing out the festival will be an evening of Viennese Operetta by such composers as Lehár, Kálmán, Strauss II, and Zeller, among others. Soloists include Polina Pasztircsák and Dovlet Nurgeldiyev.
