Jonas Kaufmann, Anja Harteros, Brian Jagde & Charles Castronovo Lead Bayerische Staatsoper’s 2022-23 Season

The Bayerische Staatsoper has announced its 2022-23 season featuring 10 new productions.

Premieres 

Benedict Andrews directs Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” with Vladimir Jurowski conducting a cast that includes Louise Alder, Avery Amereau, Konstantin Krimmel, Sebastian Kohlhepp, Sandrine Piau, and Christian Gerhaher.

Performance Dates: Oct. 26, 2022-July 17, 2023

Wagner’s “Lohengrin” will be conducted by François-Xavier Roth and directed by film director Kornél Mundruczo. The cast will include Mika Kares, Klaus Florian Vogt, Marlis Petersen, Johan Reuter, Anja Kampe, Andrè Schuen, and Liam Bonthrone.

Performance Dates: Dec. 3, 2022-July 19, 2023

Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas” and Schönberg’s “Erwartung” will be conducted by Andrew Manze and directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski. Ausrine Stundyte, Günter Papendell, Victoria Randem, Key’mon Murrah, and Elmira Karakhanova star.

Performance Dates: Jan. 29-July 22, 2023

Prokofiev’s “Krieg und Frieden” will get a new production by Dimitri Tcherniakov. Vladimir Jurowski conducts the ensemble cast that includes Andrei Zhilikhovsky, Olga Kulchynska, Alexandra Yangel, Kevin Conners, Alexander Fedin, Violeta Urmana, Eric Cutler, Emily Sierra, Sergei Leiferkus, and Maxim Paster.

Performance Dates: March 5-July 7, 2023

Sarah Aristidou, Charlotte Hellekant, and Konstantin Krimmel star in Hosokawa’s “Hanjo.” Lothar Koenigs conducts the production by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

Performance Dates: May 5-14, 2023

Hosokawa’s “Matsukaze” will be conducted by Johannes Debus and directed by Lotte van den Berg. The cast includes Emily Pogorelc, Anaïk Morel, Martin Snell, and Tom Erik Lie.

Performance Dates: May 6-14, 2023

Monteverdi’s “Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria” will be conducted by Christopher Moulds and directed by Christopher Rüping.

Performance Dates: May 7-18, 2023

Damiano Michieletto brings his vision to Verdi’s “Aida” with Daniele Rustioni conducting. The cast will include Anita Rachvelishvili, Elena Stikhina, Brian Jagde, Alexander Köpeczi, and Luca Salsi.

Performance Dates: May 15-July 30, 2023

Brett Dean’s “Hamlet” makes its Munich premiere with Vladimir Jurowski conducting a production by Neil Armfield. Allan Clayton sings the title role with Caroline Wettergreen, Rod Gilfry, Sophie Koch, Charles Workman, Jacques Imbrailo, and John Tomlinson.

Performance Dates: June 26-July 12, 2023

Handel’s “Semele” will be conducted by Stefano Montanaro and directed by Claus Guth. Brenda Rae sings the title role alongside Michael Spyres, Jonas Hacker, Jakub Józef Orlinski, Emily D’Angelo, Philippe Sly, Delphine Galou, Jessica Niles, and Philippe Sly.

Revivals 

Jonas Kaufmann stars in Britten’s “Peter Grimes” with Rachel Willis-Sørensen, and Christopher Purves.

Performance Dates: Sept. 21-30, 2022

Verdi’s “Don Carlo” will be revived with Andrea Battistoni and Daniele Rustioni conducting. The cast will include Ildar Abdrazakov, Stephen Costello, Charles Castronovo, Igor Golovatenko, Ludovic Tézier, Rafał Siwek, Dmitry Ulyanov, Alexander Köpeczi, Krassimira Stoyanova, Maria Agresta, and Clémentine Margaine.

Alasdair Kent, Florian Sempey, Renato Girolami, Anna Goryachova, and Roberto Tagliavini star in Rossini’s “La Cenerentola.” Stefano Montanari conducts.

Violeta Urmana, Elena Pankratova, Vida Miknevičiūtė, John Daszak, and Károly Szemerédy star in Strauss’ “Elektra.” Vladimir Jurowski conducts the revival.

Mozart’s “Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail” will star Nadezhda Pavlova, Katrina Galka, Pavol Breslik, Brenton Ryan, and Patrick Guetti. Giedrė Šlekytė conducts. The second cast also includes Caroline Wettergreen, Alasdair Kent, and Jonas Hacker.

Tareq Nazmi, Jonas Hacker, Milan Siljanov, Olga Pudova, and Emily Pogorelc lead Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte.” Gianluca Capuano conducts.

Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel” returns for the holiday season. Milan Siljanov, Lindsay Ammann, Emily Sierra, Elbenita Kajtazi, and Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke lead the first cast while the second cast includes Lindsay Ammann, Daria Proszek, Emily Pogorelc, and Kevin Conners. Titus Engel conducts.
