Johannes Martin Kränzle to Take Break from The Stage Due to Acute Leukemia

By Francisco Salazar

Johannes Martin Kränzle has announced he is stepping back from performances due to acute Leukemia.

The German singer announced the news via his website and said,  “I will be taking a break from all performances for the next few months in the great confidence that I will soon return to full health. I have acute leukaemia (AML). After a bone marrow disease (MDS) diagnosed and overcome in 2015, I have to undergo a stem cell transplant a second time. I would like to thank the doctors who are treating me (Gesine Bug, Salem Ajib and the team at Frankfurt University Hospital), the doctors who are advising me (Wolf-Karsten Hofmann and Peter Müller), my loving family and especially my wonderful wife Lena.”

He concluded his message by inviting everyone to donate DKMS.

Kränzle was set to perform “Das Rheingold” and “Der Rosenkavalier” at teh Teatro alla Scala and “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” at the Berlin State Opera. As a result, Ólafur Sigurdarson will take on Alberich in “Das Rheingold,” while Michael Kraus will sing the role of Faninal in “Der Rosenkavalier.” Finally, Martin Gantner takes over the role of “Sixtus Beckmesser” in all performances of “Die Meisteringer.”
