Johan Reuter, Ann Petersen & Gisela Stille Highlight Royal Danish Opera’s 2020-21 Season

The Royal Danish Opera has announced its 2020-21 Season.

The theater in Denmark will showcase a number of new productions, revivals, and concerts.

New Productions

The season opens with Barrie Kosky and Susanne Andrade’s production of Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte.” Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider conducts the production which is set to star Stephen Milling, Nicolai Elsberg, Jacob Skov Andersen, Gert Henning-Jensen, Gina Gloria Tronel, Sofie Elkjær Jensen, Dénise Beck, Simon Duus, Palle Knudsen, Gina Gloria Tronel, Rainelle Krause, and Nina Sveistrup Clausen.

Performance Dates: August 30, 2020-June 1, 2021

Beethoven’s “Fidelio” will to be directed by John Fulljames and conducted by Joana Carneiro. The cast will include Jens Søndergaard, Thomas Johannes Mayer, Niels Jørgen Riis, Ann Petersen, Stephen Milling, Mary Bevan, and Petter Moen.

Performance Dates: Sept. 27-Oct. 27, 2020

David Hermann directs a new production of Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra” with Alexander Vedernikov conducting a cast that includes Krilil Manolov, Gianluca Buratto, Gisela Stille, and Gert Henning-Jensen.

Performance Dates: Oct. 23-Dec. 1, 2020

David Bruce and Jesper B. Karlsen’s “Intet” is set to be conducted by Martin Lyngbo and conducted by Robert Houssart. The cast includes Kari Dahl Nielsen, Jacob Skov Andersen, Morten Grove Frandsen, Tomi Punkeri, Sophie Haagen, and Robert Houssart.

Performance Dates: Nov. 14-27, 2020

Poulenc’s “La Voix Humaine” is set to star Sine Bundgaard.

Performance Dates: Nov. 11-28, 2020

Michael Schønwandt conducts Carl Nielsen’s “Maskarade” with a  cast featuring Morten Staugaard, Johanne Bock, Gert Henning-Jensen, Simon Duus, Jens Christian Tvilum, Michael Kristensen, Dénise Beck, Johanne Højlund, and Nicolai Elsberg.

Performance Dates: Dec. 5, 2020-Jan. 28, 2021

Alexander Vedernikov conducts a new production of Wagner’s “Parsifal.” Keith Warner directs the production with Niels Jørgen Riis in the title role, alongside Ann Petersen, Sami Luttinen, and Johan Reuter.

Performance Dates: Jan. 10-26, 2021

Amon Miyamoto directs a new production of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” with Paolo Carignani conducting. Karah Son and Li Keng sing the title role with Elisabeth Jansson, Hanne Fischer, Raffaele Abete, Rodrigo Porras Garulo, Jens Søndergaard, and Palle Knudsen rounding out the cast.

Performance Dates: Jan. 30-June 5, 2021

Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” gets a new production by Tim Albery with Kristiina Poska and Nick Fletche alternating at the podium. The cast includes Sofie Elkjær Jensen, Kari Dahl Nielsen, Simon Duus, Matteo Macchioni, Sine Bundgaard, Palle Knudsen, and Kristiina Poska.

Performance Dates: Feb. 1-March 31, 2021

Line Tjørnhøj’s “Luft” is conducted by Ian Ryan with a cast that includes Sofie Elkjær Jensen, Morten Grove Frandsen, and Steffen Jespersen.

Performance Dates: April 24-May 12, 2021

John Fulljames directs “Light – Bach dances” with Lars Ulrik Mortensen conducting a cast that includes Mary Bevan, Mia Bergström, Gerald Geerink, Simon Duus, Nicolai Elsberg, and Hofesch Shechter.

Performance Dates: April 30-May 15, 2021

Revivals

David Kempster and Jaco Venter sing the title role of Verdi’s “Rigoletto” with Susanna Andersson and Clara Thomsen as Gilda, Diego Silva as the Duke, Aleksander Anisimov and Zaza Gagua as Sparafucile, and Dorothea Spilger as Maddalena. Tecwyn Evans conducts.

Huang Ruo’s “The Book of Mountains and Seas” will be conducted Paul Hillier.

Amir Mahyar Tafreshipour’s “The Doll behind the Curtain” is conducted by Freja Friberg Lyme.

Performance Dates: Dec. 8-13, 2020

“Pan” will be performed by Cille Buch, Charlotte Thaning, Josefine Opsahl, and Tobias Ørum.

Performance Dates: Feb. 2-7, 2021

The Danish opera “Fête Galante” is set to star Gert Henning-Jensen, Susanna Andersson, Clara Thomsen, Lars Møller, Leif Jone Ølberg, Lena Haselmann, Dorothea Spilger, Christian Damsgaard, Marcus Birgersson, Thomas Christian Sigh, Andreas Winther, Morten Wang, and Jens Jagd.

Performance Dates: Feb. 23-24, 2021

Troels Hagen Findsen, Katrina Bugaj, Julie Meera Albertsen, Anna Klett, Jesper Egelund, and Frans Hansen star in “The Hormone Diaries.”

Performance Dates: March 23-28, 2021

Leva Parša stars in Bo Holten’s “Operation: Orfeo” with Lisbeth Sonne Andersen and conductor Kaspars Putniņš.

Performance Dates: June 2-5, 2021

Concerts 

Alexander Vedernikov conducts Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Ann Petersen, Elisabeth Jansson, Jens Christian Tvilum, and Johan Reuter.

In time for the holiday season the company will present The Royal Danish Theatre’s Christmas Singalong.

Strauss’ “Daphne” will be conducted by Hartmut Haenchen and stars Gisela Stille in the title role, Niels Jørgen Riis, Gert Henning-Jensen, Jens Søndergaard, Jens Christian Tvilum, Tomi Punkeri, and Kyungil Ko.
