Joelle Lamarre Stars in South Chicago Dance Theatre’s ‘Cartography of Peace?

By David Salazar

The South Chicago Dance Theatre is set to launch the digital premiere of “Cartography of Peace?” this June.

The showcase, which features soprano Joelle Lamarre, violinist Alexandria Hill, and a composition by New York-based composer Jessie Montgomery will take place on June 26, 2021. “Cartography of Peace?” is inspired by the art of the surrealist assemblage and features dance and opera as a means of exploring peace. Audiences will hear improvisations from Lamarre and Hill as well as poetry written by choreographer Kia S. Smith.

Lamarre is a 3Arts “Make a Wave” Awardee who has appeared with such companies as Chicago Opera Theater, Long Beach Opera, South Shore Opera Company of Chicago, and the Ojai Summer Festival 2017. She appeared in the world premieres production of “Freedom Ride” and “The Central Park Five” as well as the Chicago Premiere of “Dead Man Walking.”

She is also the creator of “The Violet Hour,” a work that explores the career of legendary soprano Leontyne Price.
