UPDATE: “Between the Rooms” has been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.

The LA Opera has announced that it will continue its Digital Shorts series with film “Between the Rooms” which features newly commissioned music by composer Anna Clyne.

Clyne explores themes of isolation through the musical setting of poetry by Emily Dickinson, conceived for soprano soloist and string quintet. Soprano Joélle Harvey will perform alongside musicians from the Brooklyn-based orchestra The Knights and conductor Colin Jacobsen.

“Themes of solitude and creativity resonate with today’s experience of enforced isolation as a result of the pandemic,” said composer Anna Clyne in an official statement. “‘Between the Rooms’ evokes the audible realm that envelopes this lonely figure and explores her journey from solitude to an imaginary world—weaving melodic fragments with hymn-like statements that are conjured by the instrumentation of string quintet with soprano voice.”

The Digital Shorts series launched in December 2020, and has showcased nine new films so far.

“Between the Rooms” will premiere on LA Opera’s On Now digital platform on Dec. 10, 2021.
