The Music Academy has announced the 2022 winners of its Marilyn Horne Song Competition.

Taking home the vocal prize was mezzo-soprano Joanne Evans. Meanwhile Tzu-Kuang Tan won the prize for vocal piano.

Evans has a master’s degree from the Bard College Conservatory and was the 2022 winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Boston District. Currently a Resident Artist with Opera Colorado, Evans has performed with the Berkshire Opera Festival and the Manhattan School of Music.

Tan is a graduate student at the University of Michigan. He was an Opera Piano Fellow at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in 2021.

“The level of talent, skill, and artistry of both the singers and pianists was most impressive and moving. The repertoire choices were rich and varied, showcasing every individual’s strengths, and expressed interpretations that resonated with the judging panel and the audience for their beauty and authenticity. The competition gave strong proof that the art song is very much alive and will only continue to flourish,” said soprano Ana María Martínez, who was an adjudicator for the Marilyn Horne Song Competition.

Other judges on the competition include Sasha Cooke and Martin Katz.

The Music Academy also unveiled the winners in its other competitions. Winners include pianist Adria Ye, tuba player Joshua Williams, collaborative pianist Yu-Ting Peng, and solo pianist Angie Zhang.
