Jessye Norman’s Family File Law Suit For Malpractice

Jessye Norman’s family is suing two renowned doctors and a leading London private hospital for allegedly leaving her paralyzed.

The soprano’s brother James Howard Norman Sr. alleges that her paralysis was a result of surgery the soprano underwent in 2015 to try and cure a longstanding and painful back problem.

According to the Guardian, Norman Sr. alleges that medical negligence by anesthetist and pain specialist Dr. Adnan Al-Kaisy, consultant spinal surgeon Khai Lam and the London Bridge hospital left his sister unable to move her body below the waist.

He added, “that she suffered horrendous damage as a result of undergoing a procedure called epidurolysis, which is used to dissolve scar tissue around nerves in the spine.”

In court documents filed in the high court in London, Norman claims that “Al-Kaisy performed the epidurolysis despite the ‘limited evidence of the procedure’s efficacy, and little if any evidence of its safety,’ despite the operation being little-used in the UK and the fact that it was not recommended by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (Nice) for back pain.”

The doctors are denying all claims.

Norman died in 2019 and according to The Guardian, the soprano sought legal advice from the law firm Leigh Day and formally launched proceedings following her surgery. In 2019 after Norman’s death, her brother took over as the claimant.
