The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino has announced a cast change for its upcoming production of “Rigoletto.”

The Italian company revealed that Javier Camarena will take over the role of the Duke of Mantua replacing René Barbera. The Mexican tenor joins a cast that includes Enkeleda Kamani as Gilda and Leo Nucci in his legendary portrayal of Rigoletto.

Camarena previously performed the role at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. The tenor recently performed at the Teatro Real de Madrid in a recital and is scheduled to headline a production of “Lucia di Lammermoor” this summer in Barcelona. During the 2021-22 season, he returns to the Metropolitan Opera and the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli.

Davide Livermore directs the new production which is set to be conducted by Riccardo Frizza.

The Maggio Musicale is set to stream the Verdi masterpiece on Feb. 23 without an audience.
