Javier Camarena, Brandon Jovanovich & Piotr Beczala Highlight Deutsche Oper Berlin’s 2020-21 Season

The Deutshce Oper Berlin has announced its 2020-21 season featuring six new productions and a new Ring Cycle.

Premieres

The season kicks off with “The 7 Deaths of Maria Callas,” which will be directed by Marina Abramovic. Marina Abramovic, Nadezhda Karyazina, Whitney Morrison, Leah Hawkins, Adela Zaharia, Selene Zanetti, Gabriella Reyes, and Mané Galoyan will lead the cast.

Performance Dates: August 19-21, 2020

Conductor Jader Bignamini will lead a production of “Simon Boccanegra” directed by Vasily Barkhatov. George Petean, Dong-Hwan Lee, and Etienne Dupuis alternate the title role with Attilo Glaser as Adorno. Nicole Car and Eleonora Buratto alternate as Amelia and Liang Li, Ante Jerkunica, and Patrick Guetti all take on Fiesco.

Performance Dates: Nov. 22, 2020 -Feb. 7, 2021

Zandonai and Ricordi’s “Francesca de Rimini” will be directed by Christof Loy and conducted by Carlo Rizzi. Sara Jakubiak takes on the title role alongside Jonathan Tetelman, Ivan Inverardi, and Charles Workman.

Performance Dates: March 14- April 3, 2021

Benedikt von Peter will stage Bach’s “St. Matthew’s Passion” under the music direction of Alessandro De Marchi. Stebastian Kohlhepp, Mané Galoyan, Annika Schlicht, Michael Kim, Thomas Lehman, Joel Alison, and Padraic Rowan will be the soloists.

Performance Dates: April 25- June 5, 2021

David Hermann directs a new production of Beethoven’s “Fidelio” with Donald Runnicles conducting. Ingela Brimberg takes on the role of Leonora with Brian Jagde as Florestan. Other cast members include Gideon Poppe, Andrew Dickinson, Seth Carico, Markus Brück, Philipp Jekai, Thomas Lehman, and Jacquelyn Stucker.

Performance Dates: June 12 – 27, 2021

The company will also present a concert version of Délibes’ “Lakmé” starring Javier Camarena, Jean-François Lapointe, Jana Kurucová, Andrei Danilov, Mané Galoyan, and Lionel Lhote. Enrique Mazzola conducts.

The company will present Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” in a production by Stefan Herheim under the musical direction of Donald Runnicles.

“Das Rheingold” will feature Derek Welton, Padraic Rowan, Robert Watson, Thomas Blondelle, Markus Brück, Ya-Chung Huang, Andrew Harris, Tobias Kehrer, Annika Schlicht, Flurina Stucki, and Judit Kutasi.

“Die Walküre” will star Brandon Jovanovich, Tobias Kehrer, John Lundgren, Lise Davidsen, Annika Schict, and Nina Stemme.
