Jamie Barton, Lawrence Brownlee, Susan Graham Headline Houston Grand Opera’s 2019-20 Season

The Houston Grand Opera has announced its 2019-20 season which includes seven operas, including five new productions, one world premiere, and one company premiere. 

The season kicks off with Verdi’s “Rigoletto” in a new production by Tomer Zvulun. The famed Italian work will feature Brian Mulligan in the title role and Mané Galoyan and Arturo Chacón-Cruz as Gilda and the Duca respectively. 

Performance Dates: Oct. 18- Nov. 1, 2019

Handel’s “Saul” will make its company premiere in a production by Barrie Kosky. Christopher Purves, Andriana Chuchmann, Paul Appleby, and Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen star. 

Performance Dates: Oct. 25 – Nov. 8, 2019

The company will then feature the world premiere of Javier Martínez and Leonard Foglia’s “El Milagro del Recuerdo.” The opera will feature Cecilia Duarte, Daniel Noyola, Miguel de Aranda, Vanessa Alonzo, and Vanessa Becerra. Foglia conducts. 

Performance Dates: Dec. 5-22, 2019

Kevin Newbury directs a new production of Donizetti’s “La Favorite” with Lawrence Brownlee, Jacques Imbrailo, and Jamie Barton headlining the cast. Christophe Rousset conducts. 

Performance Dates: Jan. 24-Feb. 9, 2020

Phelim McDermott will direct a new production of Verdi’s “Aida” with a cast that includes Tamara Wilson in the title role. Russell Thomas, Michaela Martens, Peixin Chen, and Reginald Smith Jr. are the other major players in the work. Patrick Summers conducts. 

Performance Dates: Jan. 31-Feb. 16, 2020

Lise Lindstrom stars in Strauss’ ¨Salome.¨Ryan McKinny, Chad Shelton, Susan Graham, Dimitri Pittas, and Anthony Robin Schneider round out the cast. 

Performance Dates: April 17-May 1, 2020

The season will draw to a close with Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” It will be showcased in a production by Barrie Kosky and will star Norman Reinhardt, Ying Fang, So Young Park, Anthony Robin Schneider, and Thomas Glass.

Performance Dates: April 24-May 8, 2020
