Jaap van Zweden Named Music Director of Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France

By Francisco Salazar

Jaap van Zweden has been appointed Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

He will take on the position during the 2026-27 season, following Mikko Franck, who has been music director since the 2015-16 season.

Van Zweden is the outgoing New York Philharmonic Music Director, where he began his tenure in 2018. He announced he would step down in 2021 citing he wanted to “rethink his life and priorities.” His six-season tenure that ends this season is the shortest since Pierre Boulez succeeded Leonard Bernstein and led the orchestra from 1971-77.

Van Zweden started his new position as Music Director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra last month.
