The Washington National Opera is set to present “Songbird,” a new adaptation of Jacques Offenbach’s operetta “La Périchole.”

The work, which is set to be performed between March 9 and 23, 2024, will star Isabel Leonard and Ramin Karimloo.

The cast will be rounded out by Edward Nelson, Teresa Perrotta, Kresley Figueroa, Cecelia McKinley, Tesia Kwarteng, Sahel Salam, Jonathan Pierce Rhodes, Jonathan Patton, Justin Burgess, and Jo Ann Daugherty.

The work will be directed by Eric Sean Fogel and will see arranger/orchestrator and conductor James Lowe, and librettist Kelley Rourke adapt the work from Offenbach’s boleros and seguidillas to a new jazz–infused arrangement.

“Songbird” was first staged at the 2021 Glimmerglass Festival in an outdoor setting due to COVID-19 and the WNO production will expand it with a reconfigured set by James F. Rotondo III.
