The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced that soprano Angela Meade will not be appearing in the role of Amelia in Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” in December 2021.

As a result, soprano Irina Churilova will take over the role. Per the same press release, Heidi Stober will replace Meechot Marrero in the role of Oscar.

Churilova and Stober join a cast that includes Yusif Eyvazov as Gustavo III, Thomas Lehman as Graf René Anckarström, and Judit Kutasi as Ulrica. The cast also includes Samueol Park, Patrick Guetti, Tyler Zimmerman, Jörg Schörner, and Andrew Dickinson. Michelangelo Mazza conducts a production by Götz Friedrich.

Churilova has appeared at the Mariinsky Theatre, Bolshoi Theatre, Teatro Real, Oper Graz, and Arena di Verona, among others. Her repertoire includes works by Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Puccini, Cilea, and Bizet.

Meade is slated to return to the stage for performances of Bellini’s “Norma” at the Teatro Regio in Parma in March 2022.

The run of “Un Ballo in Maschera” begins on Dec. 20, and is set to last through Dec. 29, 2021.
